What The Authors Say

µTorrent is an efficient and feature rich BitTorrent client for Windows sporting a very small footprint. It was designed to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible while offering all the functionality expected from advanced clients.

With BitTorrent, you can download files faster and contribute by sharing files and bandwidth.

  mOOter's Comments

I started using µTorrent myself recently.  I had heard some good things and some bad things before trying it so I decided to give it a go and find out for myself.  I haven't used Azureus since and in fact, Azureus has been completely removed from my system.

µTorrent is unique in its use of resources.  Azureus has many features, which is why I used it, but it uses a lot of resources as it is a Java based client.  Typically I was using 100mb of RAM while running Azureus and Java.  µTorrent uses between 2mb and 4mb!  It's so light weight, it doesn't even need installing.  You just run the .exe.

It also has all of the features I have come to love in Azureus.  It gives me detailed information on each torrent and even looks a little like Azureus in the way of layout (see screen shots).  It has a Torrent Maker built in, and you can see how easy it is to use by looking at this Visual Guide.  The latest release introduces an experimental IP filter, which is what I was missing after dropping Azureus.

There were some issues with the way it behaved with trackers early on in it's development but anything after 1.1.3 is now OK in that regard.

So for me, µTorrent is now King.  I'll be updating this page as I go, reporting any developments and changes as they happen.

        Nov 30 - v1.2.3-beta - Unicode

I'm proud to present the first Unicode-enabled version of µTorrent. This will make it possible for international users to use µTorrent to download files with special character sets. It will also make it simpler for translators to translate µTorrent to their native languages.

Please note that old torrents might not find the corresponding files if the filenames contain extended characters. If you re-add the torrents in the Unicode version, it should work fine.

Download it here:
http://utorrent.com/download.php   (You need Windows NT or later)

1.1.6

This is mainly a bugfix release. We advise users to upgrade to this version. As always, it's in the download section.

A problem was identified in 1.1.5's partfile implementation and fixed in 1.1.6 that caused partial data downloaded for SKIPPED files to be corrupt. Data sent from skipped files or later unskipped could be corrupt. We strongly advise users to force recheck their files if they had previously been in a SKIPPED state. This issue does not affect files which were not skipped.

- Fix: Better multitracker support.
- Fix: When skipping files, it would corrupt the Partfile, resulting in hash fails.
- Fix: Disk Overloaded was shown too often.
- Change: Only show the "dangerous file" dialog when trying to open an executable file.
- Feature: The sorted column is now shown in a different color (Only after you clicked sort once)
- Feature: Create start menu shortcut the first time uTorrent runs.
- Feature: Show more info in the tray tooltip.
- Feature: Support lazy-bitfields, required for some ISPs, or seeding won't work.
- Feature: New page to setup advanced settings.
- Feature: Remember a peer's upload/download even if it reconnects.
- Feature: Support sparse files on NTFS (But please use this with care, it will fragment your drive).
